The False Sense of Control

We often trick ourselves into believing that worrying gives us control. If we anticipate every scenario, we think we can prevent bad outcomes. But the truth is, most things are beyond our control, other people’s actions, unexpected events, even the twists and turns of our own journey.

Anxiety doesn’t change the future; it only deprives us of the present. Letting go doesn’t mean giving up. It means focusing on what we can influence while accepting what we can’t.

No amount of anxiety makes any difference to anything that is going to happen

Alan Watts

When we release the need for control, we create space for spontaneity, creativity, and joy. As Jon Kabat-Zinn wisely said, “You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.”

Anxiety pulls us into the future, but happiness is found in the present. A deep breath, a moment of gratitude, or simply immersing ourselves fully in what we’re doing can bring us back to now. Some of life’s best moments happen when we surrender to its flow.

What if, instead of fearing uncertainty, we embraced it?

The future will unfold as it will, our job is to live today. Try going one day without worrying. Just be here. Now.
