It’s Never Too Late to Begin

“It may seem difficult at first, but everything is difficult at first.” — Maxim Gorky

My mom, who is 89 years old, recently decided to start taking piano lessons. At an age when most people are slowing down, she’s choosing to learn scales, train her fingers, and practice simple songs, all with the curiosity and patience of a beginner.

This is a great example of focusing on the process and not on the outcome.  She is not doing this expecting to become a pro or playing in a concert. She’s learning because it’s new, because it challenges her, because something inside her still whispers that beginnings are worth it, no matter how old you are.

Her determination is a living reminder that difficulty isn’t a barrier; it’s part of the process. And courage isn’t about being fearless, it’s about being willing to try, to mess up, to start again. Willing to believe there’s always something left to explore.

If my 89-year-old mom can sit down at a piano and embrace the beauty of starting from scratch… what excuse do the rest of us have?
