Feliz Dia del Amigo!

In Argentina, we celebrate “Día del Amigo” (Friendship Day) every July 20th. It’s more than just a date on the calendar; it’s a celebration deeply rooted in our culture. Streets fill with laughter, restaurants overflow with long tables of friends clinking glasses, and phones buzz with loving messages that say, “Gracias por estar” (Thank you for being there).

It’s a day of hugs, of late-night toasts, of remembering stories we’ve told a hundred times, and telling them again like it’s the first. Friendship Day in Argentina is not just observed, it’s lived.

Living abroad for the past 15 years, this day always lands with a little ache in my chest. It reminds me of the friends who shaped my early life, the ones who grew up with me, stumbled with me, and never needed explanations to understand what I felt. Across distance and time zones we stay connected, yet on July 20th, I miss their physical nearness, the warmth of a “mate” (our traditional herbal tea) passed around a circle, the comforting sense of simply being around them.

True friendship isn’t just about having fun together; it’s about the unspoken promise to stand by each other, regardless of the circumstances and without asking for anything in return.

Friendship isn’t always grand gestures; it’s in the small acts of kindness, the late-night talks, and the quiet understanding that we’re in this together. It’s the invisible thread that lifts us up, reminding us that no matter what life throws our way, we’re never truly alone.

Even if Friendship Day isn’t celebrated where you are, I invite you to pick up the phone, send a voice note, or write a simple message to that friend who means the world to you. Tell them you love them. Tell them you’re grateful for their friendship. Because friendship, at its core, is a celebration, and every day is a good day to honor it.
